Hidden Hertford – St Andrew Street

The second part of the walk starts at Old Cross outside of the Woolpack pub, where across the road is the statue of Samuel Stone. If you continue to the traffic lights you can see the old Hertford Library and the listed telephone box outside.

Cross the road at the lights and you will see Wallace House, empty as at May 2025 but there is a plaque on the wall dedicated to (10) Alfred Russel Wallace, a contemporary of Darwin who came to his own conclusions on natural selection. Further down is the fifteenth century building once known as (11) Beckwiths. Appearing to hold up the building is the ‘stone man’ but attached to the wall is a (12) Snuffer for extinguishing pith lanterns. A little further on is (13) St Andrews Church.

Retrace your steps and walk though the car park towards Hertford Castle grounds and the next part of this guide
