Hidden Hertford – Castle

Leave the car park and walk into the grounds of (14) Hertford Castle. There is too much history to relate here so enter the offices and there are plenty of written guides to help. Walk around the castle to the lawn and in front of the administration offices is the (15) Synod Stone. This commemorates the Archbishops meeting of 673AD when amongst other matters the date for setting Easter Sunday was agreed. Leave into Castle Street and you will pass the Ice House. Walking on into Parliament Square you will see the Stag on top of the (16) War Memorial. Looking left towards the traffic lights is the (17) Six Templars named after the six Knights Templars who were imprisoned in the castle in the early fourteenth century. Cross at the lights and look down Bell Lane to the right where you will see (18) Bayley Hall where is is said the story of the Hertford tunnels originated.

You are now in Fore Street and the last leg of your Hidden Hertford tour.

I have published a paperback tour of Hertford including the full Hidden Hertford tour with more photogrpahs and descriptions costing just £6.99 from Amazon.
