In a random survey of businessmen at airports and other busy places carried out by a leading briefcase manufacturer found that the most popular items carried were:
Newspapers (85%), business papers (about 80%), keys (63%), toothpaste, combs, alarm clocks, souvenirs, shoe cleaning kits and various forms of male lipstick
By far the most popular item was underwear (92%) – hence the word ‘brief’-case.
A briefcase was given as a present in almost half of those surveyed.
