COCKNEY RHYMING SLANG

My dad was a true Cockney. He was born in Hoxton in the sound of Bow Bells. Bow Bells is in Cheapside, City of London not Bow, East London. There are few cockneys left as they have been pushed out to Essex and Hertfordshire by the influx of new City workers and immigrants.

There is a lot of slang about, there is a lot of rhyming slang introduced by TV script writers but original cockney rhyming slang is not as wide as people now believe.

Here is a primer; the swearing has been omitted, the usage in brackets. Not much I can do about how to speak it, other than to drop your aitches and put that image of Dick Van Dyke out of your head.

But if someone says you've got a nice 'arris its a once removed piece of slang. Aristotle = bottle and glass = arse
