Charles Bradshaw

George Bradshaw’s legacy to the nation is a picture of travel at the height of Victorian eminence. The last Bradshaw, number 1521 was printed in June 1961. An

almost complete collection of Bradshaws was handed to Manchester Public Library (housed in the Social Sciences section) when Blacklocks Printing Works closed in 1971, having succeeded Bradshaws and Blacklocks.

Thomas Clarkson

Whilst resting at Wadesmill, Clarkson experienced a spiritual experience which he described 'as a direct revelation from God

ordering me to devote my life to abolishing the trade.' Having written an essay on the traffic in human life he decided that if the contents of his essay were true 'it was time that some person should see these calamities to their end.' That person was to be himself.

Charles Macintosh

Charles Macintosh will be remembered chiefly for the raincoat but he had many other interests and contributed greatly to local industrial innovation.

However Charles Macintosh who died just outside of Glasgow on July 25, 1843 can rest assured that his name, like that of Sandwich and Biro has entered the vocabulary as an item of everyday use, although posterity continues to misspell his name.

Jerome K Jerome

Britain is an island race. We are surrounded by water so that it is only natural that we have such a fascination with it. Such was the inspiration for Three men In A Boat written by Jerome K Jerome, published in 1889 and which has become one of the minor classics of English Literature.
