The Reverend Ian Paisley

 

One of the leading figures in Northern Irish politics was the Rev Ian Paisley who was the Democratic Unionist Party MP for Antrim from 1970. He has just announced that he will be stepping down as an MP and not standing in the 2010 General Election.

 

To understand the politics of Northern Ireland you could do worse than read extracts from this sermon delivered by Ian Paisley at the Martyrs Memorial Church in Belfast sometime around 1980.

 

"Now let me came to the question of the Pope’s proposed visit to our United Kingdom.

 

The BBC is riddled with the Romanists, absolutely riddled, its former director was a Romanist. And the head of Its religious broadcasts is a Roman priest. You’d not expect much truth from it.

 

Now we have this pernicious man Cardinal Hume. Cardinal Hume is one of the most dangerous leaders that the Roman Catholic church has ever had in England. This former Benedictine monk, Hume. Let me tell you, one of his closest relations was secretary of the British Cabinet, the British Government - and as such knows all the secrets of the British Government. And Cardinal Hume has constantly the ear of Margaret Thatcher.

 

And there’s another dangerous man, although he hasn’t the courage, nor the cleverness of Hume. That’s St John-Stevas. He’s the most abominable leader of the House of Commons they ever had. A stupid man this St John-Stevas. And of course you- know that - I can’t go into his background - but anyone who knows the gossip around London knows all about St John-Stevas. But he has a great influence with Mrs Thatcher as well. And so Margaret Thatcher is entirely dominated by the Roman lobby.

 

And this man Hume had a series of articles recently printed in the Church of England Church Times. They gave their column to him, Do you know what he said? He said, ‘I must tell the Church of England there is only one true Church.’

 

Now these Bishops accept it. You know why? Because the Bishops of the Church of England, the majority of them - are on the road to Rome. And some of them have already been ordained secretly into the Roman Catholic Ministry. I believe with all my heart that Archbishop Ramsey was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic church. Because when the Pope met him he gave him the Cardinal’s ring.

 

The Pope claims to be the only representative of God on earth. He claims to be the Vicar or substitute of Jesus Christ. One of his official titles is Lord God the Pope. He takes the name that is only in scripture given to God the Father. That name alone is given to God the Father. And the Pope usurps that name.

 

And Cardinal Hume on that broadcast kept referring to him as the Holy Father, the Holy Father, the Holy Father. Blasphemy. An insult to God Jehovah.

 

After saying he is the Vicar of Jesus Christ — by saying so he commits the unpardonable sin, because the only Vicar of Jesus Christ is God. So you will notice the Pope blasphemes God the Father by taking his title, he blasphemes God the Son by saying he is a substitute for the Lord Jesus Christ and he blasphemes God the Holy Ghost by claiming to be the Vicar of Christ on earth.”
