Fred Hill

72 year old Fred Hill began his 24th prison sentence for non-payment of fines imposed for riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet. He has been fighting the law since 1976 when Sikhs won exemption from wearing helmets.

He was gaoled for seven days for failing to pay two fines. He told magistrates: “There was a time when everybody was equal in the sight of the law. Now they are not.”

He agreed with Mrs Thatcher when she had said that 'to lose your choice was to lose your dignity'.

“I am a convicted felon,” he said. “My crime, my heinous crime, was that I decided that I would wear what I liked on my own head.”

Fred Hill died in prison on the 10th February 1984, serving his 31st prison sentence for refusing to wear a helmet.
