Gull Scarer

Cheshire County Council has provided a job description for a gull scarer, Local Authority Grade D.

It reads: to prevent gulls gathering on the site; to prevent gulls loafing or feeding at the site: to condition gulls, particularly young gulls, to think the site holds no attraction for them.

Duties are as follows: operate distress calls, using cassette player and speaker; fire shell crackers from Verey pistol; fire a 12-bore shotgun with blanks; set up and operate rope hanger devices; use gas canon; fly a kite and balloons, and throw a missile (leather bag) into the air.

Human bird scarer Bird Scarer

Early each morning Michael Dixon or one of his fellow air traffic controllers at Leeds-Bradford Airport flaps his arms to frighten local birds away from the tarmac.

The bird scarer is an extra shot in the airport’s safety locker - others include using fireworks and recorded bird distress calls - and together they seem to be successful.

Leeds-Bradford recorded only five bird strikes - collisions with aircraft - the lowest number for any airport In Britain.

Mr William Savage, assistant director of operations, said: “We have trained our staff In bird-scaring and we use the old-fashioned method of flapping our arms about. It is a skilled job because you have to judge the light and the shadows and flap your arms at precisely 24 times a minute. The birds then think they are about to be attacked by a very large bird of prey and they fly away.”
